Wendover Photos

Here's photos I took of my trip to Wendover
in April 2005.
The temperature was a little windy and cool at 50-60 degrees, but it was
generally sunny and nice. Take a light windbreaker or sweater. You can also read my comments
about my trip or check out the other Wendover
informatiom. If you were allowed to take pictures in the casino, I'd have
more of those. You'll just have to settle for these.
Montego Bay Casino
Backdrop -
From the street, you can look beyond the casino to see mountains in the back.
Front and Walkway -
Part of the front of the Montego shows you the walkway over Wendover Boulevard.
Front Entrance -
The entrance is set slightly higher than street level, giving it an uplifted highlighted aura. The outside's blue color scheme is overwhelmingly carried through the entire property.
Gas Station -
Another gas station is about a block away from the Montego Bay on the same side of the street.
Gas Stations -
Next door to the subway store is a convenient place to gas up your car.
Grass and Elevation -
Here's an illusion that the Montego Bay is surrounded by grass. There's actually some grass there, but mostly there is rock and parking lots. It's still the nicest place in town a good quality one at that.
Limo -
A stretch limo awaits use by VIP's.
Signage -
The main sign right in front.
Signage Montego Bay -
The billboard sign leaves no doubt as to where you are.
Subway Shop -
Directly across the street from the parking lot of the Montego Bay.
The Montero Bay and the Wendover Nugget. -
Looking west, you can see that the Montego Bay and Wendover Nugget compete to be the closest to the Utah border.
Montego Bay Casino Area
Bank -
A nice looking bank is nearby.
Blue Building -
A multimillion dollar property is in the same general area as a cute blue local business. It's about 2 blocks from the Montego Bay across the road on the main drag.
Bonneville Inn -
Not as nice as the Econolodge, it's still a step above some of the other non-franchise hotel properties.
BonnevilleInn -
Any other view of the Inn.
Days Inn -
Nicer than the Econolodge, its slightly further away from the Montego Bay.
Econolodge -
The Econolodge is one of the nicer non-casino hotels in Wendover.
Heritage Motel -
From the outside, this place seems a bit better than the Econolodge.
Hotel Price War -
They promise to beat any price. There's probably a good reason for that.
Midtown Minimall -
This minimall sells groceries and assorted personal products. It's the closest thing to Walmart that this area has. It's run by native Spanish speakers. Beer and soda prices are slightly lower than at the casinos.
Motel 6 -
As typical of the chains, it's on a slightly lower rung than the Econolodge.
Motel6 -
There is a lot of rooms here. They face the mountains with I-80 in the middle.
Mountain Top -
In the distance you can see a mountain top tower.
Movie Theater -
If you turn the corner by the Montego Bay and go down the road and under the interstate, you'll find the local movie theater. Since there's a lot of lower budget hotel rooms in this area, for some reason it looks a little spooky for me, even in the daytime
Pawn Shop -
There's the subway shop, a gas station and then on the same side of the road across the street is the pawn shop. Nearby the Montego Bay, I hope it doesn't foreshadow your outcome at the gaming tables.
Post Office -
The local post office is new looking and in a handy location.
Residential Business -
Off the main road but visible from it, You'll see trailer courts and an occasional nail, hair or other business.
Salt Flat Inn -
The last hotel property in Wendover. The free Red Garnet trolley turns around here and heads back to other end in West Wendover..
Taco Grande -
Looks like a safe taco eatery.
Trailer Courts -
The trailer courts contain a mixture of nice looking place and a lot of cruddy ones.
Western Motel -
My picture is cutoff, but it shows the best part of the place.
WesternMotel -
You can't see much from this shot, but that's OK too.
Western Ridge Hotel -
Up close it looks deserted.
Peppermill Casino
Across The Street -
Looking across the street from the casino, you can get a great view of the mountain backdrop that \makes this area a bit more scenic than other gambling places.
At night -
I couldn't resist another night time photo.
Back Entrance -
Entering the casino from the rear parking lot you still get an eyeful of the bright shiny lights of the casino.
Casino Bar -
You might not be able to tell in this surreptitious photo, but there is a bar located beneath that buffet/restroom sign. That is the location where I spent the last hour of my first night playing 5 cent video blackjack. Blackjack seems easier for me but
Coco Palms Sign -
The sing on the front of the Peppermill advertising it's restaurant.
Coupon -
A typical coupon for a free Buffet.
Forbidden Photos -
While photos are not allowed in the casino, this one appeared on my camera while I was waiting for the next Keno game to be called. Incidentally, one of the coupons in my Maximum Fun Book was for 5 free $1keno tickets. In trying to reach the 9 out of 9
Front -
The front entrance during a nice sunny day.
Front Entrance -
The front entrance at night with a shuttle bus van ready to transport gamblers to the Rainbow Casino and Montego Bay.
Front Entrance photo -
Plenty of parking is easily accessible to the gaming area.
Front Entrance shot -
In the daytime, the front entrance looks pretty much the same, except you can see a little more of the surrounding area. Notice the mountains in the background!
Hall Of Fame Slot Winners -
People actually do win at slots sometimes. This board is there to prove it to you. So don't give up hope.
Handicapped Room -
The close rack is spaced for easy access close to the floor.
Handicapped Room Shower -
The shower stall has a chair, water nozzles, bar, open wheel in entrance and floor drains
Handicapped Rooms -
The toilet has east access and bars.
Interstate 80 Access -
They are close enough to I80 that they can put their sing billboards on their own property. That should save them enough money that they could loosen up their slots even a little more?
Luggage -
Luggage is brought to the hotel from the airport and unloaded out front. It is then sorted and arranged for easy pickup in a side room about a half hour after arriving. This may inconvenience some people, but it is appreciated by most as the great service t
Nearby -
Across the street is a Nevada visitor information center.
Parking Exit -
Certainly not the stairway to heaven. This walkway in the rear of the casino might give you an idea of the surrounding area where these casinos are located. In spots where they haven't built, it looks like the floor of a gravel pit.
Roadway South -
This roadway heads south at the corner near the Peppermill.
Room -
Two large queen beds with padded headboard, mirrored wall and nightstand.
Room View -
Here's the spot where I drafted most of most text and tried to explains all these photos.
Rooms -
Cushy chairs and a small table for eating snacks and drinks, of course.
Rooms East -
On the east side of the property you get an idea of the number rooms available for gamblers. Even on a Friday in April, you may need a reservation. So, call ahead.
Rooms Vanity -
The bathroom vanity has a coffee tea setup, shampoo lotion soap, hairdryers and mirror.
Rooms Sign -
The sign in the closet says that irons and ironing boards are available from the front desk if you need them
Scenery -
The front entrance during a nice sunny day with the mountains in the background.
Side Entrance -
The side entrance is close to the parking lot which makes it easier for access.
Sign -
Come one come all, and play the day away.
Signs -
Sometimes, people come just to see the sights and not to gamble. As nice as thins area is, I don't see that as a problem here.
Signage -
The peppermill sign with the Red Garter Casino trolley waiting at the stop sign below.
Signpost -
The sign as seen through the blossoms.
Sign and Mountains -
A view of the mountains looking to the east toward the casino.

A view the visitor center and the mountains in the back.

Rainbow Casino
Accessible Parking -
You can get in to the casino with a short walk from the parking lot.
Backside -
A view of the Rainbow Casino from the back side gives you another idea of it's size. It also shows you what is behind the glittering front.
Behind The Building -
Nothing is behind the Rainbow Casino except a lot of nothing.
Easy Access Lots -
Getting to your room from your car may be a little less direct than this picture suggests. If you have a mobility issue, be sure to mention that when you book your room.
Gift Shop -
The gift shop has a few more item than the others. all are similarly a bit overpriced and typical for newer casinos.
Hotel -
There's even more to this hotel than this picture indicates. More rooms are located to the west, behind the casino. The pool in unfortunately also ticked away in that same area.
Hotel Entrance -
The hotel entrance is to the right of the casino entrance. The casino is on the south side of the road, so people wanting some sun in their rooms better be on the west end.
Hotel Entrance -
This large tower shows you exactly where to find the hotel entrance.
Hotel Entrance Sign -
It looks better from a distance. However, the lobby is brightly lit and unassuming.
Hotel Lobby -
This photo is distorted from the loud colors in the lobby.
Inside Walkway for Pool -
You wonder what's up when you are directed to go down this hallway to get to the pool. Later, you realize it's better than a long dark hallway, which would certainly give you cause to turn around and ask where is again.
Jacuzzi -
The Jacuzzi is good sized. Given the number of hotel rooms in this property it's probably right-sized.
Lights -
A sea of light posts almost obstructs the view of Mc Donald's across the street from the Rainbow Casino. Walking around the casino area at night appears to be very safe. The bright lights gives you an air of security.
Mountains -
There is a nice range of mountains to the south of the Rainbow Casino . Get A room facing it would be great.
Parking -
You can readily see that there's a lot of parking available here.
Parking Lot -
A large parking lot on the west side of the property separates it from the Red Garnet across the street.
Parking Lot -
Many tour buses can park here without even seeming full. The Rainbow Casino's lot is used as a parking area for some of the large local special events.
Parking Lot -
The immensity of the property is glimpsed here.
Pool and Jacuzzi -
Once you navigate your way around the stairs and walkways, you'll need a swim.
Pool and Walkway -
Once you've found the pool, it should be easy to find the casino again, if you get this far.
Pool Restroom Changing Area -
The restroom is right near the sundeck outside the pool area.
Pool Signage -
Comma's or separator figures would help to decipher this sign. Hint, each area gets two lines.
Rain Forest Sign -
This pretty blue sign advertises the Rain forest restaurant in the Rainbow Casino .
Sign -
Blue skies and a casino sign.
Sign -
The Rainbow sign and one of the free shuttles turning into the lot.
Sign -
You can get a glimpse of more mountains to the west of the Rainbow Casino .
Signs and Parking -
Even though there a lot of parking, the entrance is not too far from the sidewalk out in front.
To The Red Garter Casino -
You have to drive or walk tot the Red Garter Casino from the Rainbow Casino. No shuttle will bring you between the two properties.
Walking Access to the Road -
The sidewalk to the Red Garter Casino is near the parking lot but you need to go out the front or the back because of the steep grade and fence.
Rainbow Casino and Red Garter Casino
Signs -
Closeness invites competition and rivalries for the gamblers dollars.
Rainbow Casino Area
Burger King -
The BK is next to the truckers lounge and handy from the Rainbow Casino .
Koa Campground -
to get to the campground, turn down the street that separates the Red Garnet and the Rainbow Casino . The campground is down the hill about one block.
Mc Donalds -
Almost directly across the street from the Rainbow Casino is the local McDonalds.
Mc Donalds -
This location is notch up over the typical Mickey Dees.
Pilot Gas Station -
The gas station and Arby's give you an opportunity to gas up your vehicle and yourself. Its directly across the street from the Red Garnet.
Truckers Lounge -
This lounge area is in a very handy location across the street from the Rainbow Casino . It seems to be popular.
Wide Open Spaces -
Again you'll see large expensive buildings and then nothing but a big view to the distant mountains. I suspect the property is terribly expensive and already owned by the casinos and just waiting for further expansion.
Rainbow Montego bay and Peppermill Casino
Human Resources -
On the road between the Rainbow Casino and Montego Bay you'll find the human resources office for all three casinos. This also gives you a clue that they probably own all the land on that side of the road.
Red Garnet Casino
Casino -
That steeply graded bank in front is actually the top park of the Rainbow Casino casinos parking lot which is separated by a road.
Casino -
You can walk easily between the Red Garnet and the Rainbow Casino by using this walkway. The same good quality walkway is found all along the main street of both Wendover and West Wendover.

An unassuming front promotes the Red Garnet casino.

The red Garnet front theme is a huge poge of quaint looking theme fronts.
Peterbuilt Rig -
Offered as a casino prize in front of the Red Garnet.
Red Garter Casino
Mc Donalds -
If you don't like the 99 cent eggs, bacon, toast and hash browns special at the Red Garter Casino from Monday through Thursday, you can walk over to Mc Donald's or the nearby Burger King.

Their sign advertises entertainment. They must have been on break when I was there.
Sign and Front -
It look nice from the outside.
Super and the Red Garter Casino -
You can tell that these two properties go together.
Red Garter Casino Area
Going West -
Going west out of town the last casino is the Red Garter Casino. In the distance a large cowboy sign grabs your attention.
Pilot Gas -
This large station features gas, gifts, Arbys and a casino. The casino is smoky beyond belief. The payouts on the 30 or so machines appears to be the worst in town.
Visitor Center
Monument -
The monument in front of the visitor center honors the 509th Army Air force group that trained for the secret mission that dropped the atom bombs in 1945.
Monument Plaque -
The plaque notes the purpose of the monument.

Jet -
The Casino Express jet in roomy and comfortable.
Wendover Area
Burger King -
Burger King is at the next corner from the Rainbow Casino across the street.
Fire Dept -
The truck outside the west Wendover fire dept.
Fire Dept -
This fire dept in west Wendover appears to have all the trucks and nicer bigger building. Maybe the property taxes from all those Nevada casinos have a hand in the apparently better public facilities in West Wendover Nevada versus Wendover Utah.
Fire Dept. -
This Wendover fire dept building is modest, but there is a very nice well equipped fire house in West Wendover.
Gasoline Supply -
With the interstate, moneyed people and tourists you'll find plenty of places in town to gas up your vehicle.
Highway I-80 -
In this double semi shot, you can see how really close the interstate is to all this stuff. If you drive here, that's good news for you. This area is the first opportunity you'll get to gamble when heading out of Utah and all those Mormons in Salt Lake
Hilltop Border -
The Nugget casino in located on a hilltop which from the right angle makes it appear as if it was pushed up out of the earth.
Houses and Mountains -
It seems that houses are always grouped together. I hope everyone still has a view of those incredible mountains in the back.
I80 Access -
Easy on and easy off is the motto here. Well paved and marked roads will not lead you astray. The lure of gaming might detract you from your main mission, but the roads will get you there.
Koa Campground -
On the other side of this street side fence is the campground. The casinos are on the top of the hill, but there's nothing else around it to interfere with your sleeping
Koa Campgrounds -
I would think these cabins wouldn't be all that needed given the thousands of hotel rooms in the area. If you want something by yourself, I suppose it would fit your need nicely. From the outside they look well maintained and possibly even very comfy.
Koa Campgrounds -
The entrance is easy to find
Koa Campgrounds -
There's plenty of room toward the back of the campgrounds for your rig. The mountains are there for you too.
Koa Campgrounds Entrance -
The entrance is not far from the Rainbow Casino and the Red Garter Casino. The mountains in the back are wide open to campers there.

Mc Donalds and Mountains -
In our state, we don't have mountains like these.
McDonalds -
Parking is not short here either.
Mountains -
A view from the front room in the Rainbow Casino will also yield mountains.
Mountains and Parking -
Two things not in short supply are mountains and parking.
Parking -
Even where there is no apparent need, you'll find parking.
Parking -
Wide open spaces means plenty of places to park here when you get here. Periodic special events that drew a lot of vehicles won't have parking problems.
Pawn Shop -
There are two pawn shops in town. This one has more tools and less fun looking stuff.
Scoble Park -
This small park is directly behind the state visitor center.
Scoble Park Equipment -
Colorful playground equipment to keep the little kids busy and wear off some of that excess energy from riding long distance in a car.
Scoble Park Rules -
Park rules are clearly posted.
Semi Trucks -
In case you wonder how you get most of the products to your local store, it's from semi trucks. This place is full of them. They also seem to be in a better driving mood for some reason.
Signage -
Directional signs points out your destination options of Wendover or Ely.
Signs -
I never tire of casino signs, they keep you oriented in town a lot better than traffic signs.
The Main Road Has Large Casinos, Modest Buildings And Vacant Acreage. -
Traffic -
It's clear shot down the road from the Rainbow Casino. Traffic is usually y very light.
Trucks and Mountains -
The trucks are parked in the truckers lot. A view of the mountains in the back.
Visitor Center -
Death Valley, Yellowstone, The Rocky Mountains, Mount Rushmore and the Badlands are all represented here with informative pamphlets for each of them.. For a map and info junkie like myself, this place is a windfall of good information.
Wendover Nugget Casino
Front -
The hotel registration area jumps out at you, as does the walkway over the road to the Montego Bay.
Front -
The Wendover Nugget is directly across the street from the Montego Bay. It was the first casino in the area and has basically kept up the property. The two casino hotels are connected by a crosswalk over the street.
Hillside -
This is the west backside of the Nugget.
Hillside Gravel -
Oddly, there is small pieces of broken glass throughout the gravel near the sidewalk. This gravel was brought in and put there along with the glass.
In The Distance -
A view of the Wendover Nugget casino looking up the hill to the east.
Mountaintop -
Looking west from the west side of the Nugget you can see the Peppermill in the distance. There's a bench about 1000 feet from here where you can sit and look out at the mountains.
Mountaintop View -
Approaching from the east, you don't realize that the Wendover Nugget is actually plunked down on the top of a hill. As seen from the west side sidewalk, it looms out at you.
Sidewalk -
It looks like an ATV took a short cut from that grouping of houses on the bottom of the hill.
Sidewalk Bench -
Here's a view of the mountains and the terrain from the handy bench on the sidewalk leading into the other West Wendover casinos.
Sidewalk Up To the Nugget -
Be sure you have the stamina if you decide to walk up the hillside to the Nugget or Montego from the Peppermill below.
Sidewalk View -
This sidewalk leads down into West Wendover. The Peppermill is on the other side of the road and in the distance. Take the free shuttle if you don't want exercise.
State Line -
If you look down while you're passing the Montego Bay and Wendover Nugget, you'll see the road is marked for Utah and Nevada
Watertower -
Looking up the hilltop rocks you'll see what appears to be a water tower.
