Central City and Black Hawk offer limited stakes gambling with a $5 maximum bet. There are more than 10,000 slot machines, blackjack tables and poker tables in 30 different casinos, many of them housed in historic old buildings.
Central City, once called the "Richest Square Mile on Earth," this historic old mining town is dotted with old gold mines and hundreds of Victorian buildings (see photo, right). More than a half billion dollars of gold was mined in the area and the town once boasted a population of 30,000. Today, there are 300 year-round residents. Along with Black Hawk, it is part of a National Historic District. Admission is free.
Black
Hawk, is a mile from Central City and is the site of most of the major new
casino development. Black Hawk, "The City of Mills," is one of
Colorado's oldest cities. It
is one of a number of towns that grew up in "Gregory's Gulch," the
narrow ravine where Georgia prospector John H. Gregory first discovered lode
gold in the western part of Kansas Territory in 1859.
If you'd like to stay in hotels outside of Denver or Boulder, you can get a feel for small town life 5 10 15 and 20 miles from Black Hawk.
Directions - From Denver. Take 6th Ave. west out of Denver
toward Lakewood and Golden. W 6th Ave. becomes US-6 W. Continue on US-6 W until
you reach CO-119, which will take you straight into Black Hawk.
From Boulder:
Take Broadway, which turns into CO-93, south out of Boulder toward Golden.
Continue south on CFO-93 until you reach US-6. Turn right on US-6 heading west.
Continue on US-6 W until you reach CO-119, which will take you straight into
Black Hawk.
